How Throw Pillows Can Completely Change a Room

How Throw Pillows Can Completely Change a Room

Throw pillows are small, but they can do a surprising amount of work.

A sofa can go from feeling flat to layered.

A chair can suddenly make sense in the room.

A colour that felt random can feel intentional.

And a space that was looking a little too serious can instantly feel warmer and more relaxed.

That’s why we love them.

They’re one of the easiest ways to give a room more personality without changing the furniture itself.

They can completely change the mood of a sofa

Take a simple neutral sofa.

Add two striped pillows and suddenly it feels a little more tailored.

Add a floral and a plaid and it leans more collected and country.

Add rich velvet or deep earthy colours and it feels warmer and moodier.

Same sofa.

Completely different room.

That’s the beauty of pillows.

They let you change the feeling without starting over.

They’re an easy way to introduce pattern

Pattern can feel like a big commitment when you’re choosing a sofa or chair.

Pillows make it much easier.

A stripe.

A check.

A floral.

A block print.

Something a little unexpected.

You can introduce pattern in a smaller dose and see how it feels in the room.

And once you start, you’ll probably realize pattern is a lot easier to live with than you thought.

We especially love pillows for tying together other patterned pieces in the room.

Maybe you already have a floral chair.

A striped pillow on the sofa can help connect everything without making the room feel too coordinated.

They help colour feel intentional

Sometimes a room has a colour you love, but it only appears once.

Maybe there’s a blue in the rug.

A rust tone in the artwork.

A green chair across the room.

Adding a pillow in that same colour family creates repetition.

And repetition is what makes colour feel intentional.

It doesn’t have to be an exact match.

Actually, it usually looks better when it isn’t.

You just want the colours to feel like they belong in the same conversation.

Texture matters just as much as colour

A pillow doesn’t need to be wildly patterned to make an impact.

Texture can do plenty on its own.

Linen.

Velvet.

Wool.

Bouclé.

Woven fabric.

Embroidery.

Fringe.

A room with lots of smooth surfaces can feel much softer and more inviting when you add a few tactile fabrics.

This is especially helpful with leather sofas, clean-lined furniture or more neutral rooms.

The texture keeps things from feeling flat.

Mixing pillows should feel collected, not perfect

We’re not big on buying six identical pillows and placing them symmetrically across the sofa.

It can work.

But usually, we like things a little less perfect.

Different sizes.

Different patterns.

A mix of solids and prints.

A little variation in texture.

The goal is for everything to feel related without looking like it came in one boxed set.

A simple formula we like is:

One larger solid or textured pillow.

One pattern.

One smaller contrasting print or stripe.

That alone can make a sofa feel much more finished.

You don’t need that many

More pillows does not automatically mean a better room.

Sometimes three really good pillows look far better than eight average ones.

You still want to be able to sit down.

We love a layered sofa, but we also believe furniture should actually be comfortable to use.

Choose fewer pieces with great colour, pattern and texture and let them have some space.

They’re one of the easiest seasonal changes

You don’t need to redecorate your whole home every season.

A few pillow changes can be enough.

In warmer months, you might lean into lighter linen, softer colours and fresh stripes.

In the fall, bring in deeper rust, olive, plaid or velvet.

In winter, heavier textures and warmer tones can make a room feel instantly cozier.

The furniture stays.

The room still feels familiar.

It just shifts a little.

Pillows can make older furniture feel fresh again

This is one of our favourite tricks.

Sometimes you don’t need a new sofa.

You just need to stop looking at the same pillows you’ve had for seven years.

A fresh combination can make a familiar piece feel completely different.

Try pulling colours from your rug or artwork.

Introduce a pattern you wouldn’t normally choose.

Change the scale.

Swap two small pillows for one substantial one.

Small changes can have a surprisingly big impact.

Don’t be afraid of a little contrast

One of the fastest ways to make a room feel more interesting is to stop making everything perfectly match.

If your sofa is blue, your pillows don’t all need to be blue.

Try rust.

Cream.

Green.

A stripe with a little blue in it.

A floral with several colours.

Contrast creates energy.

And as long as there’s some connection elsewhere in the room, it will still feel cohesive.

Good pillows make the whole room feel more finished

They’re not usually the first thing you buy.

But they’re often the thing that makes everything else make sense.

The sofa.

The rug.

The chair.

The artwork.

The colour palette.

Throw pillows help connect those pieces and give the room a little softness and personality.

They make the space feel lived in.

Which is really what we want.

The Georgian & Co approach

At Georgian & Co, we believe the best rooms have character.

A little pattern.

A little texture.

A few pieces that make you smile.

And not everything needs to be a huge decorating decision.

Sometimes changing a room really is as simple as adding a great striped pillow, a floral you weren’t expecting and something beautifully textured beside it.

We curate furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories that are designed to work together without feeling overly matched.

Curated, not chaotic.

Warm.

Layered.

Interesting.

And easy to live with.

Because sometimes the smallest pieces are what make a house feel the most like home.

Furnish with character.
