Article: What Size Rug Do I Need for My Living Room?

What Size Rug Do I Need for My Living Room?
There are a few decorating mistakes we see over and over again.
A rug that’s too small is very high on the list.
And we get it. You’re looking at an 8' x 10' rug online and thinking, that sounds enormous.
Then it arrives, you put it under the coffee table, and suddenly it looks like a postage stamp floating in the middle of the room.
The good news? Rug sizing is actually pretty simple once you know what you’re looking for.
Here’s how we think about it.
The easiest rule: connect the furniture
A living room rug should help bring your seating area together.
It shouldn’t just sit underneath the coffee table with your sofa and chairs floating somewhere around it.
Ideally, at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit comfortably on the rug.
That one change can make a room feel significantly more finished.
It gives everything a relationship to each other.
Sofa. Chairs. Coffee table. Rug.
Suddenly the room feels collected instead of scattered.
Is an 8x10 rug big enough for a living room?
Often, yes.
An 8' x 10' rug is a really useful size for a smaller or medium-sized living room, especially when you’re working with a standard sofa and one or two accent chairs.
But don’t automatically assume 8' x 10' is the answer just because it’s a common size.
Measure your actual furniture arrangement first.
We like to use painter’s tape to mark the rug dimensions directly on the floor.
It takes five minutes and tells you far more than trying to visualize eight feet in your head.
If the tape barely reaches underneath the front legs of your sofa, we would probably go larger.
When should you choose a 9x12 rug?
If you have a larger living room, a substantial sofa or a sectional, a 9' x 12' rug often creates a much more generous look.
And generous is usually what you want.
One of the easiest ways to make a beautiful room feel slightly off is to undersize everything.
Tiny rug. Tiny coffee table. Tiny lamp.
Everything technically fits, but nothing feels grounded.
A larger rug creates a proper foundation for the room and lets your furniture breathe.
What size rug should go under a sectional?
With a sectional, scale matters even more.
A sectional is a big visual piece, so putting a very small rug in front of it can make the proportions feel strange.
We usually want the rug to extend beyond the coffee table and underneath at least the front portion of the sectional.
For larger sectional arrangements, moving into a 9' x 12' or even 10' x 14' rug can make the entire room look more intentional.
The important thing is not the number on the label.
It’s the relationship between the rug and the furniture sitting around it.
Should your rug be wider than your sofa?
In most rooms, yes.
We generally prefer a rug to extend beyond the width of the sofa rather than stopping short of it.
It gives the sofa something to sit within visually instead of making the rug look like a small accessory placed in front of it.
This becomes especially important with longer sofas and sectionals.
What if you have a small living room?
Small rooms do not automatically need tiny rugs.
In fact, a too-small rug can actually make the boundaries of the room feel more obvious.
A properly scaled rug can make a compact space feel much more cohesive.
If you’re decorating a condo, smaller sitting room or cottage nook, think about the entire seating arrangement rather than the total square footage of the room.
Sometimes an 8' x 10' rug in a smaller room looks fantastic because it creates one continuous foundation.
Pattern can help, too
This is where things get fun.
We love a room with a bit of character, and rugs are one of the easiest places to introduce it.
A patterned rug can hide everyday life a little better than a perfectly flat solid colour, but more importantly, it gives you something to build the rest of the room around.
Pull one colour into your sofa.
Another into an accent chair.
Repeat a smaller tone in a lamp, cushion or throw.
It doesn’t all need to match.
Actually, we’d rather it didn’t.
The goal is a room that feels collected, warm and interesting—not like everything came as part of a matching set.
Our advice when you're between two rug sizes
Go bigger.
Not recklessly bigger, obviously.
But if you’re choosing between a rug that just works and one that gives the furniture a little more room, we’ll usually take the latter.
Furniture looks better when it has some space around it.
Build the room from the ground up
At Georgian & Co, we curate furniture, rugs, lighting and home pieces with warmth, texture and personality.
We like spaces that feel lived in. A little pattern. Beautiful upholstery. Natural texture. A lamp that makes the corner feel completely different at night.
Curated, not chaotic.
And when you’re choosing larger pieces, we want the process to feel just as considered as the finished room.
That includes delivery.
White-glove delivery is our standard.
Your furniture is handled carefully, brought into the home, placed where it belongs and the packaging is removed. We treat the home with respect and keep communication clear throughout the process.
Because choosing a beautiful sofa is much more enjoyable when you’re not wondering how you’re going to get it through the front door.
Furnish with character.
